The Royal Hunt Twigg Jigsaw - Alzheimers aversion or the funny farm - that is the question?

My daughter is an ex-graphic designer so overly endowed with creativity and imagination, and she exhaustively applies these attributes to her present selection. So for Father’s Day this year I got the 671 piece Royal Hunt jigsaw puzzle from Twigg Puzzles.

The Royal Hunt is based on the original artwork of a renaissance oil painting, so the aged paint greys, blues, greens and even the blacks all seem very similar, adding to its complexity.

Where to start? I know let’s position the larger pieces. The Knight of old on his trustee charger with joisting lance, the swords, fearsome clubs, chess pieces, crosses, horses. Nice idea but nowhere to be seen in the painting. The evil devils who designed this jigsaw have cut out pieces in known shapes just to confuse you.

Back to a trusted technique - do the straight edged pieces first. Another nice idea but those same evil designers have many edge pieces with minuscule straight edges, as well as others with long straight edges that fit into the body of the jigsaw.

Got the idea yet? This jigsaw puzzle is a real challenge but one I would not let beat me. So after 6 days of squinting at elaborated shaped wooden pieces (with the odd curse), I completed this mental challenge. The most frustrating moment was when I caught my wife fitting the last 10 pieces (after hiding for 6 days) and she then had the cheek to state “the family will be really impressed that WE managed to complete it!”

Since completion I have undertaken an exhaustive survey of friends and colleagues. Were my daughter’s intentions honourable, designed to avert alzheimers in an aged father, or evil, like the jigsaw designers, designed to push me over the edge into the funny farm. It’s a close call at the moment but when I found myself reassembling vegetable peelings last night, I started to doubt myself! If my wife gets a Twigg jigsaw puzzle for Xmas, we’ll be changing our Power of Attorney.

So in summary, a beautifully designed jigsaw with 671 intricately cut pieces, that will keep your brain cells humming. I would love to see how they cut out those pieces so precisely. Another of their design evils, the pieces fit so precisely that you will often think you have the wrong piece. If you love jigsaw puzzles, I can HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
